Gun Safety and Gun Ownership

1. Question. From: Shelia Canfield-Jones of Bailey, CO
Would you support a county ordinance that limited home owners from voluntarily using firearms on their property when they own less than 10 acres? Would you be willing to support a "common sense" county ordinance that forbids the voluntary discharge of firearms within 1500 feet of a school or play ground where children are present?

1. Answer. Thank you for your question I share your concerns regarding school safety.  Currently the United States has over 20,000 firearms laws on the books.  I think you will agree with me that legislating more laws does not  correlate to more protection. The answer is simple, studies have concluded that the best way to protect our kids from a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun that is already in the school. Most of our metro school districts have school resource officers that are trained for such a threat.  I strongly believe in putting school resource officers in our schools.
As a father with two children in 4-H shooting sports I believe firearm safety, education and training is an essential component.  4-H teaches our younger generations to  be courteous, and to be good neighbors .
There is a state statue that is applicable to unsafe shooting. The statute is reckless endangerment it is a class III misdemeanor. I hope this helps.

2. Question. Do you support individuals being able to own guns? If not, why and if so, why?

2. Answer Yes. Our 2nd Amendment gives Americans the right to own firearms. I additionally believe in responsible firearm ownership and was instrumental in getting a shooting range in our county for citizens to practice this God-given right.
